The Ultimate Guide to Water Savings: Tips That Hit Your CT Home

Did you know the average monthly cost of water in Connecticut is $69.  Water may be something we as consumers take for granted.  Do you know what water is costing you per month?  Is it higher or lower than the state average?  Leave me in comment!

As the video above explains, lets dive into some tips to lower your bill.  Whether you are a homeowner or not, these tips are for everyone.  You may not even pay for water, but if you have aspirations of becoming a homeowner, some day you may have too.

Did you know 75% of water consumption in the US happens in your bathroom.  This is why several of these tips revolve around this one room.

Take Shorter/Colder Showers:  I know what you are thinking, I am not gonna freeze, and not clean myself properly, just to safe a little.  As someone who likes hot showers, I can relate.

Many people take longer showers than they need, just cutting back a little can make a difference.  The advice isn't to take cold showers, but colder showers, so instead of steaming hot, make it warm.

The average shower take up to 5-7 gallons of water per minute.  Hot water equals 18% of your annual utility bill.  Changing your showering habits can make all the difference.

Use the Dishwasher:   As I write this blog post my energy efficient dishwasher is running.  It is amazing something that runs for 2 hours can safe you on water.

The average dishwasher only uses 3.5 gallons of water per load.  That is much less than if you were to wash your family's dishes by hand every night.  Studies show that can take upwards to 27 gallons.

Toilets:  Old ones use up a  lot of water, so replacing them can save you $$$ in the long run.  Also look for water leaks in the toilet, because that can bring your bill up.  There are special kits you can buy to check whether you have a leak in your toilet.

An old toilet can use 4 times more water than a new one.  You ever see those buttons on a new toilet?  You have the regular flush, and the eco friendly flush that uses less water.

Composting:  Instead of running you garbage disposal.  If you think of it, when you use the disposal, you have to run the water.  Not only do you safe on water, you enrich the soil outside.

Rainwater:
Did you know in Bermuda, they design their gutters in a certain way to collect the rainwater.  This is because, they don't get much rain out there.

You can then use this water for your garden or other uses, that don't require water to be clean.  This also can benefit in other ways like preventing sewer backup.

Landlords:  As a landlord you already have many bills, if you have tenant taking advantage of free water, you can always have them pay for it.  Submeter your units.

Low-flow fixtures:  Just like your toilet, your other water fixtures can be eco friendly too.  Install these fixtures, and watch the savings on your monthly bill.

Leaks:  I talked about a leaky toilet, but any sort of leak can cause your water bill to go up.  A good way to prevent leaks is to keep up with regular maintenance.

I hope these tips help you save on your water bill.  For more great home tips read my other blog posts at cthomefront.com.  Remember if you can also find great tips about real estate there too.  If you are thinking about getting into the Real Estate Market here in Connecticut Contact Me, and I'll get you started.
